“I was a massive fan of Gillian Anderson. I had to audition, and she was in the auditions because she had already been cast. I remember the scene was an odd one, because it was a scene where I had to touch her t–, it was a scene where I’m crying and she cradles me while I slowly put my hand on her t–. So I did it and she pulled away, but I think I got this instant respect from her.”

“She made the ultimate decision: it was out of me and Ashley Walters, so were they going to go with me or a black guy? So it was very, very different actors.”

“The rape thing again comes back to haunt me: it’s based around gang rape and then our whole motivation for getting revenge is fuelled by closure, she needed closure. The fact that we raped this guy at the end with a gun in his a—…for me the last image is the most important image you leave in a movie, what people take away from it. It was brave. Quite arty, I thought.”
